# About mantispy

mantispy brings Cell Painting and other image-based profiling data into the scverse ecosystem, from reading what a pipeline wrote through quality control, normalization and batch correction to evaluating what survived.
Profiles live in an `AnnData`, so scanpy's PCA, neighbors, UMAP and Leiden work on the same object, and the images and segmentations behind them are read as `SpatialData`.
If you find mantispy useful for your research, please check out {doc}`cite`.

## Why is it called mantispy?

mantispy is named after the mantis shrimp, whose eyes carry up to 16 types of photoreceptor where ours carry three.
A Cell Painting screen, too, looks at every cell through more channels than an eye would.
